37th Parallel (Chase Bank, 199 Main Street)

37th Parallel is a rock band based out of the San Francisco Bay Area in Mountain View, California. While playing at different locations around the South Bay they keep the music of previous generations alive by covering bands like The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cheap Trick and many others. 37th Parallel is currently writing an album and are performing their newest material at almost all of their gigs. They also keep a Facebook page, Twitter, and YouTube Channel up and running so check it out!

Foggy Memory Band (Linden Tree, 265 State Street)

The Foggy Memory Band grew out of mutual interest in bluegrass music. Founder, Jon Cross of Saratoga, started casual get togethers of his amateur musician friends to play for fun in his home. The number of members grew to eight regulars and occasional guests. New members brought in their favorite songs and the repertoire expanded to the point that no one could remember all of the material; hence The Foggy Memory Band got its name. They perform a variety of bluegrass, country, folk, and Americana in a casual acoustic style.

Fully Funded (Costume Bank, 169 State Street)

Fully-Funded is a frequent performer for First Friday. They are a cover band that plays a wide selection of music across many genres including classic rock, 70s, disco, jazz, and pop music. All of the members live in Los Altos. The band plays monthly at local Los Altos establishments like Maltby’s and First & Main, as well as private parties and corporate events.

Larry & Carla (Know Knew Books, 366 State Street)

Two handbell musicians – formerly too many miles apart, but now together! They met on the online Handbell Community in 2007… and on Facebook in 2009. Larry was in California, and Carla was 6,000 miles away, in England. After far too many months in a long-distance relationship, their K-1 visa was granted in May 2012 and they were wed in that September. Check out their rendition of an Arabian Dance.

Lingonberry Aires (First and Main Street)

Comprised of a vocalist-guitarist, guitarist-bassist, trumpeter, clarinetist-trombonist, and drummer, The Lingonberry Aires play a mix of jazz standards and more recent pop tunes that will delight those who love the American songbook and its eclectic offspring

The Sunday Seven (Boulanger, 301 State Street)

The “Sunday Seven” have been playing music together for 5 years and consists of members of 4 accordions, 1 tuba, 1 percussionist, and sometimes a clarinet and recorder. All of the musicians are members of the Silicon Valley Accordion Society. They play for Italian Festivals, Octoberfests, Holiday festivities, and also entertain at the Silicon Valley Accordion Society several times each year. Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley (Community Plaza, 130 Main Street) Pronounced “kahn / TAH / bee / lay ,” it is an Italian word which, in a musical context, it refers to a smooth, flowing, and melodious style. This is exactly how Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley sound as they perform exciting music from many different cultures, time periods and styles. The singers, ages 4-18, enjoy weekly rehearsals, seasonal concerts, participation in music festivals, and tours abroad, are frequent guests with premier symphony, opera and ballet companies, and have performed a stand-alone concert at Carnegie Hall. Fully-Funded (Costume Bank, 169 State Street) Fully-Funded is a frequent performer for First Friday. The band plays monthly at local Los Altos establishments like Maltby’s and First & Main, as well as private parties and corporate events. Handbell Musicians (Adventure Toys, 173 Main Street) Two handbell musicians – formerly too many miles apart, but now together! Jazz Love Quintet! (Village Stationers, 222 Main Street) Jazz Love Quintet! consists of multi-diverse musicians and entertains people with their light upbeat family-friendly music, including Swing, Bossa Nova, Blues, Funk, Pop and world music! People ages zero to 92+ will enjoy their performance at the First Friday event! She performs George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berling and other great American composers and presents music history at elementary schools. Mollie along with Scott Vanderlip enjoys performing at community venues like the Westwind Barn and Hidden Villa, and Mollie and Scott recently directed “The Music Man” at Egan Junior High School. Pomegranted (Bubble Kids, 220 State Street) Like a Jean Grae and her transfiguration into the mighty Phoenix, Pomegranted has followed a haphazard yet, august journey. Coming about from the ashes of Cosmic Paste in 2013, the group has found solid ground. Featuring Mrs. Reece breathing fire, the Kameda Kid tapping souls, Schwaninger sabering the drums, and Patel sewing the strings, Pomegranted comes out of San Jose, CA yet, spews a mixture of melodies. Scott Vanderlip (Know Knew Books, 366 State Street) This performer from Los Altos enjoys and shares his love of music in a variety of ways with the community. As a piano and guitar player, and vocalist, he performs locally for some seasonal and often kid related performances in the area. He has also helped to direct several local school and backyard musical productions and can be always found assisting the girl and boy scouts at senior homes for holiday concerts or other local events. For several years, he was a music docent for Music for Minors teaching K-3 students in LASD schools the love of music. He plays an eclectic set of music ranging from folk, pop, musicals, kids songs to those well known camp fire songs. Don’t stand too close or he might ask you to join the band in song! Hop Onboard for the Holidays

Published on Wednesday, 27 November 2013
Written by Los Altos Town Crier Staff – Town Crier Report

This month’s First Friday festivities, scheduled 6-8 p.m. Dec. 6 in downtown Los Altos, take on a holiday theme – “All Aboard for the Holidays!”

The Los Altos Forward-sponsored event includes free train rides courtesy of the local American Legion; browsing and shopping at retail shops and galleries, many of which offer discounts and free refreshments; and nearly 20 restaurants serving a variety of cuisines.

In addition to partnering with the Los Altos Village Association on the return of the annual tree-lighting event (see story above), First Friday will feature drawings for hundreds of dollars in gift certificates donated by downtown merchants.

Attendees can enter either by playing the “Find the Train Tickets” game at participating merchants or by purchasing merchandise that evening.

Scheduled performers include: juggler Jonathan Luxton; cover band Fully Funded; a brass quartet from Los Altos High School featuring Janelle McAfee, Vishnu Vachani, Gabi Wachs and Daniel Noel; a guitar duo featuring high school musicians Chris Burton and TJ Lascola; the Black Mountain Radio string band; and an accordion group called the Sunday Seven.

The performers will be stationed at various storefronts throughout downtown.

Coinciding with First Friday is the opening of a new downtown addition, Helix by Exploratorium at 316/320 State St.

“Helix is thrilled to contribute to our first First Friday,” said Helix Director Ann Richardson. “As you stroll along State Street, look for the cinematic projection on our second-floor window celebrating light. Join us inside Helix for hands-on explorations of light and color.”

Los Altos Forward, a program of the Los Altos Community Foundation, is a volunteer group dedicated to promoting vibrancy in downtown Los Altos. First Fridays are designed to provide fun, social and community-building evenings for local residents.

For game information and to enter the drawing, visit First Friday headquarters inside Know Knew Books at 366 State St.
